How do you feel when you read this quote:
"The only toxic relationship in your life is the one with yourself. Every other relationship is a reflection of that."
We may believe our relationships exist outside of ourselves, but our mates (and friends, and others we choose to relate to) are simply mirror reflections of our choices, our beliefs, and the current way we regard ourselves.
"But what if my partner is an assh*le?"
Your decision to enter into relationship with that "assh*le" provides all you need to answer that question. You attract the wounds you want to heal. You attract the challenges you wish to overcome. You attract reflections of your core beliefs, the ones silently guiding your actions in the background of your life. You attract what you believe you are. And you put up with it when you don't believe you deserve BETTER.
I stopped asking why people show up a certain way in my life and started asking why I manifested them as part of my experience.
